Toronto, June 23, 2015 – The “10 most influential Hispanics Canadians” returns to Toronto on Wednesday, July 15 at the spectacular Distillery Historic District. This 9th national edition features an international keynote speaker, a ‘meet and greet’ session with past winners, an overview of Pan American culture presented by Francisco Alvarez and Jose Ortega, and the renowned artist Amanda Martinez as Master of Ceremonies. Copa Airlines, Seneca College and NuevoMundo TV are program sponsors. There are 200 tickets on sale now with another 100 reserved for past winners, program judges and corporate guests.

The 300 people in attendance will include media, diplomats, entrepreneurs, community leaders, past program awardees including the three already mentioned as well the nominees who come from four provinces representing eight countries of origin.

The nominees include one of North America’s most respected mathematicians, an accomplished artist with hits being played in Hollywood’s major movies, top journalists, one of the best live painters in Canada, the CEO of Latin America’s biggest online medical bookstore founded at age 17, a real hero who has saved thousands of lives honoured by the Governor General of Canada, a highly placed executive in Canada’s banking sector, an entrepreneur who controls a market in one of Canada’s largest provinces, an artist who has received for four consecutive years the Communication Arts Magazine’s Award of Excellence, award winning authors, dedicated community advocates and successful business people that have left a mark in society. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has privately met with past winners at his office in Parliament Hill.

The Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) provided assistance to the Canadian Hispanic Congress for this year’s awards program, which is run by the Hispanic Business Alliance. Both groups are members of Ignite, the community promotion program established by the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Fiorella Tubino, director of the CHC stated that “the financial support from the CIC confirms the trust placed in our non-profit organization as the appropriate vehicle for the disbursement of funds for community events associated with the PanAm/ParaPan Games. We are proud to be part of this program”.

With 80 awardees representing 17 countries from 7 provinces, the “10 most” has had a presence in Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Saskatchewan, Calgary and Toronto. Judges for the awards include past winners as well as executives and journalists from the Calgary’s Canada West Foundation, Globe & Mail, National Post, Toronto Star, CBC, Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, Canadian Council for the Americas, Canadian Aboriginal & Minority Supplier Council, Diversity Business Network, and the North American Association of Asian Professionals.

The 741,760 Hispanics living in Canada in 2006 were five years younger and more likely to be university educated than other Canadians. More than 70 per cent had arrived in the previous 25 years – this according to a Statistics Canada study based on the 2006 census. Spanish is the third most widely spoken language in the country as indicated on a study from the Canadian Foundation for the Americas FOCAL.
