ASEAN is currently one of the world’s top growing markets, and a priority for the Government of Canada. In 2017, the ten members of ASEAN had a combined GDP of $2.8 trillion USD ($3.38 trillion CAD) and a population of 643 million. Bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and ASEAN totalled $23.3 billion CAD in 2017. The Government is committed to deepening trade and investment relations with ASEAN in order to benefit Canadians. On September 1, 2018, the Government launched 45-day public consultations on a possible ASEAN-Canada FTA. The main objective of the consultation is to hear from a broad range of partners, stakeholders and individual Canadians to help define Canada’s interests in a possible FTA with ASEAN and inform future decisions on next steps, including whether to launch FTA negotiations. For background information, please consult the possible Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement webpage. We are very interested in receiving your views on a possible ASEAN-Canada FTA. Please take the time to participate and share your unique perspectives and insights. We would welcome receiving your written response on this issue, by email to [email protected] or you may send your submission to: Canada–ASEAN trade consultations The consultation will remain open until October 16, 2018. We look forward to hearing from you on this important initiative.
