Week in Review

 Monday July, 20th

On Monday, our government announced that the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) will be increased again for the 2020-2021 benefit year to keep pace with the increased cost of raising children. The CCB has put money in the pockets of 9 out of 10 Canadian families. This benefit is increasingly more important during the COVID-19 crisis, as many SMEs, entrepreneurs and workers have lost income and are staying home to help take care of children while schools and daycares are closed. This increase is just one of the many ways we’re helping families get ahead.

Also on this day, Minister Jordan announced $4.2 million to help small businesses in rural Nova Scotia who have been hit particularly hard through COVID-19. This investment will help support our local businesses and the people that they employ continue to navigate this crisis and be well placed for recovery.

 Tuesday July, 21st

Canadians are innovative and resilient – always finding solutions to the day’s challenges. On Tuesday, Minister Bains announced close to $230 million in funding to continue helping our research facilities adjust their work to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more here.

 Wednesday July, 22nd

On Wednesday, Minister Anand announced the Essential Services Contingency Reserve – helping essential service organizations, like hospitals and clinics, get access to personal protective equipment (PPE) and other critical supplies, keeping Canadians safe as we begin to reopen and rebuild.

 Thursday July, 23rd

On Thursday, Minister Ng visited Trillium Health Partners – Mississauga Hospital to highlight the one-year anniversary of the launch of our government`s CAN Health Network. As we work to combat COVID-19, it is critical that Canada remain at the cutting edge of health care technology to offer the best possible care to Canadians, while supporting small businesses and creating good jobs in this sector.

Our government launched the CAN Health Network to help streamline the procurement process for innovative companies and create a receptive marketplace This integrated market builds a bridge between the needs of health care organizations and the technologies of Canadian entrepreneurs, helping businesses develop their solutions domestically and export their made-in-Canada ideas to the world.

Also on Thursday, S&P Global Ratings reaffirmed Canada’s AAA credit rating. Going into the global pandemic, Canada was well poised to leverage our strong fiscal position to support Canadians, and we have. Canada’s COVID-19 response is ensuring workers and businesses have the financial support they need to weather this crisis and come back strong.

 Friday July, 24th

As the economy reopens, childcare is an absolutely vital part of helping families in communities across the country, especially women who are both entrepreneurs and mothers. That’s why our government announced $625 million to support Canada’s child care sector – ensuring that safe and sufficient child care spaces are available.


To get the help you need: 

  1. Visit our government’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan website for information about supporting your employees and your business.
  2. Contact your local financial institution. Since we know most small businesses have a relationship with their local financial institution already, we’ve worked    with the financial sector to increase their lending capacity to support you in this challenging time. They are an excellent first resource.
  3. Consult the Canadian Business Resilience Network, a partnership between our government and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce to help your business prepare, persevere and prosper through this crisis. 
  4. Check out the new PPE Supply Hub  Canadian businesses in need of personal protective equipment, and businesses looking to sell these supplies can go to this hub to connect.
  5. Make the POST Promise to show employees and customers that you take COVID-19 prevention seriously by practicing key health and safety steps and maintain a safe workplace.
